Spiritual Check Up

Spiritual Check Up

February was hard on me health-wise. I was sick three times, which is very unlike me. I had a terrible stomach bug first. I hadn’t thrown up in 15 years until then. Then I had COVID for about a week. Finally, I ended the month with a miserable sinus infection.

Not only have I not been sick in some time, I haven’t had three bugs in a month, maybe ever. So, what is the difference this year? It might be because I didn’t get a flu shot for the first time in years. I tried once, but they wouldn’t take my insurance so I forgot about it. I am even taking vitamins for the first time since I was a kid taking Flintstone vitamins. They haven’t helped. I also have let myself get run down in a way I haven’t been in a while.

The health prevention mechanism has been important to my physical well-being all these years. But this year, I got lazy and didn’t prevent sickness, so in February, I paid the price.

I think there is a correlation between physical health and spiritual health. My spiritual life has always been full of ups, downs, and sideways. There have been times when I have felt completely alone and at the very bottom. There have also been mountaintop moments and everything in between.

My spiritual wellness seemed to go with the flow of the wind. It was unpredictable and unsteady.

Last fall, I decided to take my spiritual wellness seriously by doing something I had never done before: reading the Bible every day first thing when I woke up.

Now, as soon as I open my eyes, I reach for my glasses and my Bible app and read the Word. Sometimes, it’s only one chapter, and sometimes, it's several. It depends on how sleepy I am and whether I can keep my eyes open.

After I read, I’m committed to prayer daily. I talk to God throughout my whole morning routine, thanking Him, praising Him, worshiping Him, and asking for help for myself or others. I also pray throughout the day for my needs and the needs of others.

This has had an obvious impact on my spiritual wellness. I am more consistent and steady than ever before. I feel peace in my life, and I am truly learning to trust God.

What are you doing to help your spiritual wellness? Are you consistently in the Word? Are you surrounding yourself with other believers and meeting non-believers where they are? Are you sharing what God has done for you?

God has performed miracle after miracle for me, so now I am doing all that I can to trust Him and tell others about Him. Thank you, God, for loving me.
